Mayors' Walking Challenge
In an effort to inspire community members of Clinton and Weatherford to become more physically active, we are joining forces with Weatherford's Walking for Wellness program and serving both communities with a challenge to walk more miles during the month of October. Acme Brick Park's Downtown Dash will serve as a Kick-off for the Challenge and Weatherford's Fall Fun Walk will be the finale on October 30. In between, participants will log their miles walked for exercise (excluding running miles and miles walked on the job) and then turn in their logs as selected drop off sites following the October 31 cut-off date. A Grand Prize Drawing will be held following the deadline for submitting logs. Those eligible for the Grand Prize will have walked at least 3 miles per week throughout the challenge.
Follow our Training Program to finish your first 5k Race!
10 Weeks to a 5K
You should be healthy enough for moderate intensity exercise to start this program. If you aren’t sure if you are healthy enough, you should talk to your doctor BEFORE starting! Starting slow is the KEY to success in this program. Don't rush the steps and don’t worry about your speed. If you aren't ready to move up to the next level, then stay with your level for another week! Don’t worry if you don’t quite make it to 3.1 miles before race day. A LOT of people will be walking at this race so don’t push yourself so hard in the weeks before the race that you can’t participate in it at all. Make your "Running" days on 3 non-consecutive days of the week. So your days can be Monday, Wednesday and Friday or Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Your choice. Run early in the morning or late in the evening during the summer months because you don't want the heat to be an excuse to not go for your run!
Always Always Always warm up before you begin running!!!! 5 minutes of brisk walking should be adequate. Cool down following your run by walking until AFTER your breathing returns to normal and then stretching.
